Her OHMA thesis collects and shares the stories of queer and trans South Asian chosen families. Ananya has worked on many oral history projects, including at the University of Washington Gender, Women, Sexuality Studies department, the Brooklyn Museum, and currently, at Lehman College. You can find Ananya’s writing published in YES! Magazine, The Asian American Feminist Collective, Sinister Wisdom, and elsewhere.

While at OHMA, Ananya Garg’s oral history project on queer/trans South Asian chosen families has evolved into a visual art project. Through coursework in the Visual Arts department, Ananya completed a series of 100 paintings exploring care, intimacy, love, and attention in her chosen family.
NOTE: A selection of the paintings will be displayed as part of the Spring 2025 Visual Arts Undergraduate Exhibition on Friday, May 2 from 6-9pm in Prentis Hall (632 West 125th Street). This in-person event is for anyone interested in visual art, especially those who are interested in connecting with art centers South Asian LGBTQ+ chosen families. Ananya hopes to reach other LGBTQ+ people of color. This exhibition will take place in a Columbia University building and may have limited access to non Columbia ID holders.
