OHMA EXHIBITS: a collection of interactive oral history encounters

One Door Down: Profiles from a New York City Apartment Building During the COVID-19 Pandemic (2022)

By Tyler Brady

A collection of profiles from one apartment building in Astoria, delineating each family's experience before and during the pandemic in New York. These profiles analyze the changing city in which the narrators live, the impact that lockdown and restrictions had on them, and their outlook on the future. I ask viewers, while going through the profiles, to consider their own experience, and how it might compare and contrast with those of their neighbors.

Tuesday, May 3, 7 PM

How has the COVID-19 pandemic changed your life? How often have you been able to talk with someone about these changes?

In this live event, we will discuss just that; our experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic. Come prepared to discuss your story, and listen to those of others, to find new insights into this historical period that we’ve all shared.

COVID drove us apart, it’s on us to come back together. Forging new connections during the pandemic is hard, but not impossible. We will also discuss the community building element inherent in my project, One Door Down: Profiles from a New York City Apartment Building During the COVID-19 Pandemic, where I sought to build stronger bonds with my neighbors over our shared experience. During the event, I ask you to consider, what might reaching out to your neighbors during the pandemic have looked like for you? Would this new support have help you make it through?
